Summary
As evening descended upon the Kings Way, the caravan pulled off the road to a campsite for the evening. During the night, the group received visitors. Three mounted men approached the camp. Their apparent leader identified himself as Havelock, and his two companions as Antrim and Wilhelm. Havelock explained that the three of them were in the employ of the Corethan nobleman Lord Kegan Striker. They had set out from Coreth looking for a group of thieves who had stolen something valuable from Striker. The group consisted of two men, one short, rotund, and wide-faced, the other tall, thin, and hook-nosed, and an attractive young woman. All three were dressed in servicable travelling clothes befitting craftsmen or peasants.
The PCs indicated that they had not seen the three. Havelock asked to search their wagons to verify what they said. At this, they roused Harlan from his slumber. The merchant would not let the wagons be searched, which increased the tension of the situation. However, the Corethan agreed to drop the matter, moving on but asking that they speak with him in Winterhaven to let him know if they ran across the hunted trio as they continued their journey.
The rest of the night passed without incident.
The next day, later in the morning, the group noticed a couple of large wagons farther to the east but bearing swiftly down on them. Courteously, they pulled the caravan over to the side of the road to allow these other wagons to pass. In short order, however, it was evident that these vehicles were sent to find them, as they could be seen to bear the markings of House Malor. They stopped near Drumm's procession and immediately commenced to attack the group. Archers and wizards launched volleys against the party while swordsman (including the Malor company's apparent leader) issued from the backs of the wagons to engage the group in melee.
It was a hard battle but the PCs prevailed. Near the end, one of the wagons turned and fled; Shashank grabbed a horse from the other and gave chase. Eventually outpacing it, he leaped onto the wagon, knocked the driver off (who survived being trampled by the horses), and killed his archer companion. The rogue then turned the wagon around and headed back to the caravan (and finished off the driver.
Two surviving archers from the other wagon were disarmed and sent back, on foot, to Coreth; they were not burned alive in their wagon by Kalnac (who apparently had a change of heart and favored the idea of keeping the wagons). When interrogated, little could be garnered from the footmen of the group; apparently, any information the PCs could have gleaned from them died with their leader or the wizards.
Afterwards, the group continued its journey to Winterhaven.
