Eldritch Order of the Ur'Zaal Scrolls
Ur'Zaal was a magician of unfathomable power who lived during the late First Age. He was one of the first humans to be taught magic by the Nepharim and was one of their best students. However, Ur'Zaal craved more than the Nepharim could (or were willing to) teach him. In his thirst for greater knowledge, he abandoned arcane magic in favor of the forbidden secrets of the Outer Gods. The wizard gained much more power but his sanity slowly left him in the process. Ur'Zaal is said to have lived into the Early Second Age but was killed in a ritual when he tried to open the prison holding the Old Gods.
During his pursuit of dark magics, Ur'Zaal recorded his rituals and spellwork onto a collection of scrolls. After his death these scrolls were lost, scattered across the continents through travel, trade, and theft. Today, these parchments can be found in dragon's lairs, treasure vaults, and private libraries. Their owners, however, are generally not aware of what they possess, as even those who practice magic lack the skills to decipher Ur'Zaal's writings.
However, there is an order of mages who do know how to read these scrolls - the Eldritch Order of the Ur'Zaal Scrolls. A society of about sixty magicians, the Order seeks to recover Ur'Zaal's ancient texts. They endeavor not only to achieve the mastery of dark magic that Ur'Zaal did, but also to open the prisons binding the Outer Gods. The Order members believe they will be greatly rewarded when dominion of the world is returned to its ancient overlords.
