Grimthorn
Haunted Ruin
Grimthorn is a large, ruined fortress found in the southern Tharan Mountains. Originally it had been built as a staging area for Ulthian incursions into the mountains to keep the Kyrgar at bay. In 1087, the lord of the fortress, Volmar Magenheim, renounced Ulthia and Azakhar and declared Grimthorn to be an independent settlement dedicated to the greater glory of Shaarizad.
Needless to say, Ulthia's response was to send an armed force to the fortress to put down this rebellion. They laid siege to Grimthorn for almost two months until a huge band of Kyrgar warriors swept down from the mountains and attacked them. The savage attack was too much for the Ulthians and forced them to retreat. As it turned out, Magenheim had made a deal with the mountain folk to help him against his former countrymen. Unfortunately for him, after driving off the Ulthians, the Kyrgar turned on the weakened forces of Grimthorn and slaughtered or enslaved the fortress's inhabitants. They then returned to their mountain homes, leaving the fortress a battered ruin.
Grimthorn remains abandoned by Ulthia, as they do not have the resources to spare to reclaim the place. Humanoid tribes and other creatures have taken up residence in various parts of the fortress, and it is said that Magenheim still roams its crumbling halls in the form of some type of Undead.
