Irongate

Fortified Trade Town

Irongate is a fortress-town found on the eastern edge of the Avellyn River Valley. It was originally an outpost of the Thallosean Empire, built in the late Second Age as part of a line of defenses to protect against attacks from the (now defunct) Kingdom of Avellyn. Today it is a fortified town and is a popular stop for caravans traveling to or from Ilmara.

The remnants of a long, fortified wall - the Avellyn Wall - can be found northwest and southeast of Irongate. Thallosea had originally intended to build a wall across the entire entrance to the valley, from the Orcfangs to the Dragonstongue Mountains. The Thallosean civil war prevented the wall from being completed. Remnants of the wall remain, as well as a handful of ruined watch towers. A number of the towers are occupied by bandits or monsters. Warriors from Irongate will occasionally root out the occupants of the nearer towers, but it doesn't take long for someone else to come and claim them for their own.
