Religion
There are a variety of deities and powers that are worshiped by the people of Mythosa. The more powerful are part of the "Divine Host" - survivors of the Divinity War, a great deific battle that took place centuries ago. Worship of these gods is from those seeking power, pleasure, or blessings on particular endeavors. The rest comes from people who simply wish to appease the gods to avoid disease, death, or other unpleasant situations.
Many of the gods of the Divine Host are, by choice or by force, united into various groups, usually referred to as churches. While a church consists of multiple deities, they are considered a single body in terms of its clergy (for instance, there are no clerics of Isa or paladins of Baltur, but there are clerics of the Dyad of Order and paladins of the Triumvirate of Light). Individual deities are still called upon by non-clergy for particular requests, and even those who are dedicated to serving a church often favor one of its members.
The churches of the Divine Host are:
- The Triumvirate of Light
- The Dyad of Order
- The Dark Court
Some of the gods belong to no church: Ilvidicus, Jhadara, Karnus, Shaarizad, and Skaldur:
- Jhadara, Karnus, and Skaldur are collectively known as the "Elemental Enclave" in some theological circles, though this is not a church and the three do not associate with one another (the latter two are actually sworn enemies). They are grouped together because of a number of characteristics shared by the three - each is associated with one of the elements, each is highly volatile and capricious, and - unusual for gods - each dwells on the mortal plane rather than in the Astral Sea. These factors have led some to say the three gods belong in the Faith of the Earth Mother rather than the Divine Host.
- Ilvidicus is an enigmatic, dark wandered who also lives in the mortal world.
- Shaarizad is regarded as the most vile and base of the dark gods.
